The 2022 Australian Cross Country Championships will be held at the Oakbank Racecourse in South Australia's Adelaide Hills.

The event will be hosted on Saturday, August 27, and Athletics SA expects to select a strong South Australian team being a "home" National event.

Both Athletics SA and School Sport SA will be selecting teams to compete at the Championships. The selection trial for the Athletics SA team will take place at the 2022 State Cross Country Championships on July 30.

Athletics Australia is delighted to announce that there will be prize money for the 75th edition of the Australian Cross Country Championships.

To celebrate the milestone, which coincides with Athletics Australia’s 125th anniversary, a total prize pool of $14,000 will be awarded to the first six placegetters in each of the men’s and women’s 10,000m individual championships next month.

The amount has been generously donated by a benefactor via The Athletics Foundation, as a way to boost the sport ahead of the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Bathurst next February.

“With the countdown on for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst, there is much excitement around cross country around the nation, so this donation comes at a very exciting time for our sport,” Athletics Australia Chief Executive Officer Peter Bromley said.

“Cross country is an event that is known and loved by all, with so many Australians having taken part on it from their school days right through to adulthood, and it’s fantastic to be able to support our 2022 Australian Cross Country Championships further thanks to our very generous donors. We’re grateful for this contribution.”

The prize money distribution will be:

  1. $3,200
  2. $1,800
  3. $1,000
  4. $500
  5. $300
  6. $200

Athletics Australia is also excited to inform that the selection trials for the 2023 World Athletics Cross Country Championships will take place in Canberra on January 15.

The selection criteria for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships Bathurst 2023 will be released in late August, and a public forum will be held to allow athletes and coaches to ask questions and seek clarification on Team selection.

Cross Country 2

On Saturday, Athletics SA hosted its third Cross Country meet of the 2021/22 Winter Season.

The Winter Series headed to Botanic Park on a cold July morning, where runners tackled a winding course, culminating in a steep incline along the Hackney Road edge.

Across the Open 8km races Adelaide Harriers runner Thomas Dowd (24:14) and Pembroke's Lucy Mauviel (27:50) broke through for their first wins in a senior Winter Premiership event.

In the Men’s race, Cross Country 1 winner Cael Mulholland (25:21), Dowd and Hills Districts' Max Stevens (24:24) made the early running before Dowd and Stevens broke away.

Dylan Holland (25:05) worked his way into third and stayed there to the end, while C. Mulholland finished fourth overall, but first in the Men's U20 age group.

Mauviel ran a strong gun to tape race ahead of Saints' Brooke Hines (28:13) and Madeline Kelly (30:03) of Flinders.

The fields for the school age groups were bigger than usual as this race was the second selection trial for the State team to compete at the National Cross Country and Relay.

Younger age group winners were Pembroke's Isla Fahey (11:30) in the Women's U14, Port Adelaide's Tessa Ebert (14:09) in the Women's U16, United Collegian Tiana Cetta (14:34) in the Women's U18, Pembroke's Molly Cook (22:10) in the Women's U20, while Adelaide Harriers trio Flynn Ritossa U14, Joseph Hewson U16, and C. Mulholland U20, and Saints' Jonathan Harris U18 won the Men's Under Age races.

In the older age groups Flinders' Robert Killmier (18:49) won the Men's O35, Harriers' Stephen Trutwin (23:27) the Men's O50, Brooke Logan (24:38) the Women's O35 and Felicity Alexander (30:57) the Women's O50.

Premierships (after Round 5)

In the Open premierships Flinders maintained their lead over Adelaide Harriers and extended their lead in both O35/O50 premierships.

Adelaide Harriers are building a strong under aged squad taking the lead in the Men’s U14/U16 and U18/U20 premierships and extending their lead in the Women’s U18/U20 premiership.

Flinders have maintained their lead in the Women’s U14/U16 premiership.

The next Round of the Winter Premiership is the State Cross Country Championships on July 30, held at Victoria Park. Visit the Winter Hub for more info.
