State 5000m Championships

Published Wed 23 Nov 2022

Athletics SA hosted the State 5000m Championships at the Bridgestone Athletics Centre in Salisbury on Saturday night (February 19).

Following the cancellation of Copyworld Toshiba Interclub 2 (due to lightening and heavy rain) on February 12, the weather continued to taunt athletes during Saturday night's 5000m event and Interclub 3 during the afternoon.

Heavy rain and wind caused havoc during every race on Saturday night, making for very difficult conditions over the 5000m distance.

Men's U20 5000m State Champion Cael Mulholland leads the Men's A race ahead of eventual Men's Open winner Max Stevens and runner up Adam Goddard.

The Hills Districts and Flinders athletics clubs have been strong over this distance for a number of seasons and that battle continued on the track in 2022.

Hills athlete Max Stevens won the Open Men's State Title, running 14:18.51 ahead of Saints Athletics Club's Adam Goddard (14:19.17) and Flinders' Jacob Cocks (14:25.36) in a sensational race.

It looked as though any one of Stevens, Goddard, Cocks, Adelaide University's Cael Mulholland, Adelaide Harriers' Thomas Dowd or Tasmania's Bailey Murzecki-Hince could have taken out the race, before the top three finishers stretched away from the pack in the closing laps.

It was a sprint to the finish between Stevens and Goddard with the more experienced Hills athlete getting the job done.

Mulholland claimed the Men's U20 crown with 14:41.01, ahead of University teammate Deacon Gore (15:34.50) who won the Men's B race.

Adelaide Harriers' Tara Palm (Women's O35) was a comfortable winner in the Women's A race, running 16:39.45, ahead of Brooke Hines (17:21.83) and Sophie Hlipala (17:24.23).

Tara Palm leading the chasing pack in the Women's 5000m Championship race.

United Collegians runner Tiana Cetta was next over the line in 17:26.43 to take out the U20 Title.

Other winners were Flinders' Robert Killmier (14:52.99) in the Men's O35, Flinders' Colin Ambrose (16:35.69) in the Men's O50, and Hills' Fecility Alexander (24:58.17) in the Women's O50.

It's another State Championship event this Saturday, with the State Relay Championships taking place in Salisbury. Contact your club to enter a team.
