Funding and Support
Athletics SA recognises that athletics is largely an amateur sport and that the financial incentives to participate are largely absent, particularly for athletes wishing to pursue Australian representation. Athletics SA provides programs to assist athletes in their development, but is limited in its ability to do so, however, there are often other avenues for finding available to athletes. The purpose of this page is to provide information for athletes on potential funding sources, so that we can help support you to achieve your dream – whatever that may dream may be.
Following are some ideas of avenues that may be available for athletes, particularly those that gain state or national representation:
Australian Sports Commission
The Australian Government, through the Australian Sports Commission offers a number of grants including a Local Sporting Heroes fund to assist young athletes covering some of the costs for travel to national events. Visit www.ausport.gov.au/supporting/funding to access the funding information page
Office for Recreation and Sport (SA)
The South Australian Government’s Office for Recreation and Sport offers limited funding. Visit www.recsport.sa.gov.au/funding-scholarships/index.html#Athletes
Many local councils offer grants of between $50 and $100 to support athletes who earn the right to represent their state or country. Visit your local council’s website or give them a call for more information. Alternatively, a list of local councils is available on the LGA website
Community Focused Organisations
Many community focused organisations offer grants to athletes who are performing at national or international level. Groups such as some Rotary Clubs sometimes offer grants for people in their local area. Your local council’s website is often a great place to search for local community groups. There are a number of foundations available too, particularly from large Australian businesses.
City Bay Fun Run Trust
Adelaide’s largest fun run supports athletics in South Australia through a special trust fund. The City Bay Fun Run Trust is a valuable supporter of Athletics SA and contributes significant financial resources to Athletics SA programs. For example, the state junior athletics teams, Falls Creek camp, and some equipment purchases are subsidised by grants from the Trust. Applications addressed to the Trust can delivered to Athletics SA who will forward on to the Trust committee.
