Moneghetti to Run in Adelaide’s Fitzy’s 5 During London Olympics

Steve Moneghetti, one of Australia’s most recognisable and accomplished athletes will return to Adelaide for the third year in a row to participate in the Fitzy’s 5 fun run on Sunday 5th August during the London Olympics.

Fitzy’s 5, South Australia’s largest 5km fun run, honours the memory of South Australian Olympic athlete David Fitzsimons who passed away in 2008 at the of age 58 after a battle with non-hodgkins lymphoma. Fitzy’s 5 also raises vital funds to support cancer research conducted by the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Foundation with over $10,000 raised in the first two years of the rapidly growing event.

Marathon man Moneghetti, whose best Olympic Games finish was 5th in Seoul in 1988 is a current Athletics Australia national selector and will watch the Australian Flame Athletics Team from Adelaide. Moneghetti, who expressed his excitement about returning to participate with more than 1000 runners and walkers in the unique Fitzy’s 5 event, said of Fitzsimons:

“Dave was a pioneer of our sport, running times that would still see him winning National Titles even today. He was renowned for his tenacity and determination but off the track he was a humble and unassuming person.”

Moneghetti again encouraged the people of Adelaide to sign up and participate in Fitzy’s 5.

“Let’s all get behind this terrific event and raise funds for the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Fund, working in the area of cancer research, in the memory of Dave Fitzsimons”.

Athletics SA Executive Director, Adam Bishop, added:

“We’re excited that Mona will be returning to Adelaide to take part in Fitzy’s 5. This is an amazing opportunity in an Olympic year to recognise the feats of David Fitzsimons, raise vital funds for the Royal Adelaide Hospital Research Foundation, and run (or walk) with an iconic Australian in Steve Moneghetti”.

With a percentage of every entry received going to support important cancer research, RAH Research Fund, Fundraising Manager, Mark Goldsmith encouraged the people of Adelaide to visit and sign up for the run or walk.

“We encourage people to enter Fitzy’s 5 and then help us to raise additional funds through Everyday Hero”, he said.

Entries for the third annual Fitzy’s 5 on Sunday 5th August open today. With new discounted fees for children under 13 years of age, the inclusion of a family package, being an Olympic year, organisers are expecting record participation numbers in 2012.
