It is with much sadness that Athletics SA advises the athletics community of the passing of renowned coach Professor John A Daly OAM, after a battle with illness.
John's contribution as an athlete, coach, official, sports educator and mentor leaves an amazing legacy in South Australia and across the world.
Before moving into coaching, John was a member of the local Adelaide Harriers Club. As a coach, John was appointed into many coaching and selection roles including within the Olympic Games Teams (1976, 1980, 1984, 1988 and 1992), Commonwealth Games Team in 1974, IAAF World Championships Teams (1983 and 1991) and IAAF World Cup Teams (1975, 1979, 1981 and 1989).
John was instrumental in facilitating the amalgamation of men and women's athletic associations, as well as establishing the Australian Track and Field Coaches Association. John was also a founding member of the Australian Coaching Council, chairman of the Council's Technical Committee which introduced a national coaching accreditation scheme, and was a Board member of the Australian Institute of Sport from 1981 to 1985.
John and his late wife Judy's contribution to athletics over such a long period of time won’t soon be forgotten. Rest In Peace, John.
On behalf of the South Australian athletics community, we extend our condolences to the Daly family, friends, colleagues and athletes.
John’s funeral will be on Wednesday, 21st March at 10am
