The Officials Recruitment Program is a free program run by Athletics SA to upskill participants in order to become a World Athletics Level 1 Technical Official. While open to all, the program has been created for teachers. Teachers will be able to take their new skills back into their schools to improve the running of athletics events, trainings and Physical Education classes while maintaining safety and encouraging student participation in Athletics. Funding has been provided to cover the cost of Temporary Relief Teachers to enable staff to undertake this program. For non-teacher participants they can attend the theory workshops as available and the in-competition practice dates are flexible for all.

Alongside E-learning modules, participants will participate in workshops and in-competition training to deepen their understanding of Athletics rules. This will culminate with participants that would like the opportunity to volunteer at the 2024 National Athletics Championships which will double as the Olympic and Paralympic Games Qualifiers in Adelaide in April, being able to officiate up close to the action as Australia's best athletes compete for the chance to join Australia's Olympic and Paralympic teams.

This program will upskill teachers in Athletic rules and recording systems with focus on the more techincal disciplines not often well understood. This will allow teachers to better run Athletics events, trainings and Physical Education classes while maintaining safety and encourage student participation in the sport.

Development

Teachers will:

  • be given access to a range of online resources to further their own development both in techincal rules and instructing athletes
  • learn from experienced officials how to communicate with an athlete through supportive and corrective measures
  • view a wide range of athlete proficiencies
  • see how experienced coaches and officials communicate feedback to athletes in an inclusive and positive manner
  • have an insight into how Athletics events are run to create a safe and supportive environment
  • be provided a certificate of completion once they have finished the program

In preparation for the Olympic and Paralympic Games Qualifiers and ultimately the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, funding has been secured which will cover the cost of temporary relief teachers to schools of participants. This will cover 1 day of temporary relief teaching per participant. See the calendar for dates.
