It was a three-day event filled with highlights and records, which culminated in the 18-year-old blasting away from a strong Open Men’s 200m field, to clock 20.41 on Sunday afternoon.

SA’s Bruce Frayne’s State Record was previously set at 20.59 in 1980, while Murphy also chased down 1984 Olympian Fred Martin’s 20.48 National U20 Record, which was set in 1985.

Murphy said he had been trying to track down the Open Men’s 200m State Record all season.

“It is great to get that time over and done with – I have been looking at that for a long time and to do it here at the State Champs means a lot to me,” he said.

“It was a really strong field, a big shout out to the Victorian boys for coming over to SA and they made it such a good race.

“I got one of the best starts that I have ever had, I wish I could have that every race – that’s really what it (the record) came down to because I was able to finish off strong like I usually do.

“Fred Martin’s time of 20.48 is great, I feel privileged to be able to beat it because he is a great runner.”

Murphy said he was now turning his attention to the Australian Track and Field Championships, with an eye towards the World Athletics U20 Championships.

Victoria’s Michael Romanin ran 21.13 to finish second and Pembroke’s Duncan Cameron finished third in 21.33.

Also setting a new National Record on Sunday was Southern Athletic Club’s Angus Hincksman, who won the Men’s U18 800m State Title in 2:01.39 – a Men’s U20 T38 Australian Record.

“I am feeling so good, I have been hunting down Deon Kenzie’s Record for years,” he said.

Hincksman also broke the Men’s U20 T38 National Record in Saturday’s U18 1500m, running 4:11.69.

“All my goals and aspirations that I have been hunting for so long are coming together,” he said.

“I have a few National Records next to my name and it shows what I have done and my progression over the years.

“State Champs weekend is great – I struggled with it when I was younger because I was basically the only Para Athlete, but now it’s grown so much and there are so many options out there for everyone.”

Jordi McMillan and Lakara Stallan both ran World Athletics U20 Championships qualifiers in the Open Women’s 200m Final on Sunday.

Saints’ McMillan ran second to Jessie Andrew of Victoria and Stallan third, but their times of 24.16 and 24.33 snuck under the qualifying standard of 24.40.

Tea Tree Gully Athletics Centre thrower Marley Raikiwasa won four Gold Medals over the weekend, including the Open Women’s Shot Put and Discus, and the U18 Shot Put and Discus.

Saints 12-year-old Ken Ferrante-Tanikawa finished his busy schedule with a haul of 10 Gold Medals – Men’s U14 100m, U14 400m, U14 90m Hurdles, U14 Pole Vault, U14 Long Jump, U14 Triple Jump, U14 Shot Put, U14 Discus, U14 Javelin and U15 200m Hurdles.

DAY 2

SA teenager Charlotte McAuliffe edged out Tokyo Olympian Kendra Hubbard in the Open Women's 400m race on day two of the State Track and Field Championships on Saturday night.

The 15-year-old (McAuliffe) last week won the U16 Heptathlon title at the Australian U15-U18 Combined Events Championships in Sydney and tonight made it a perfect fortnight, running 56.14 to knock off Hubbard (56.37).

Charlotte McAuliffe, right, won the Open Women's 400m State Title, while Iluke-Rose Taylor, left, won a silver medal (as the second SA athlete across the line).

Hubbard, who travelled from Victoria to compete in SA's State Track and Field Championships, ran the 4 X 400m at the Tokyo Olympics.

Twelve-year-old Western Athletics Club runner Iluka-Rose Taylor ran third in the race (56.65) to take the silver medal.

McAuliffe said she was shocked to run faster than Taylor, let alone Hubbard.

"That was such a good experience, coming down the last straight I felt really good and just kept going for it," she said.

"I did not expect to do as well as I did - I would have been really happy to get third.

"I registered in the Open race to see what I could do, run a PB and run against girls who are faster than me to push me along.

"I was so nervous to run against Kendra because I know how fast she is, but I knew she would push me."

McAuliffe's previous 400m PB was 57.66, and believed that her strongest event was the 200m.

Hills Districts Para Athlete Jack Netting jumped a Men's F35 National Record (4.69m) in Saturday night's Open Men's Para Long Jump competition on Saturday.

Jordi McMillan's World Athletics U20 Championships qualifier (11.89) to win the Open Women's 100m State Title.

Another record fell in the early stages of the State Track and Field Championships, Marley Raikiwasa of the Tea Tree Gully Athletics Centre threw 51.54m in the Women's U18 Discus to break both the Women's U20 and U18 Discus Records.

Raikiwasa's throw also qualified her for the World Athletics U20 Championships, while Saints Athletics Club thrower, Darcy Miller, threw a near World Athletics U20 qualifier (55.56m) to win the Men's U20 Discus Title on Friday night.

Hills Districts runner Matthew Clarke ran his Tokyo Olympic discipline - the Open Men's 3000m Steeplechase - and clocked 8:36.82 to take the Gold Medal.
