2022-23 State Track and Field Championships – Records and Results.

Athletics SA hosted the South Australian Track and Field Championships on Friday 3rd – Sunday 5th March 2023 for the first time on the new track.  

Many South Australian athletes went into the weekend with the aim of being crowned State Champion and to qualify for both National and International competitions.

Olivia Sandery (Pembroke), the 2021-22 Open Women 5000m Walk title holder started off the Championships with a bang on Friday night. Recording a super swift 21:09.08, Olivia’s time was a 12 second improvement on Tanya Holliday’s state record of 21:21.25 set in 2012.

The Open Men 100m Final proved to be an event you did not want to miss with four records broken between our hometown hero Aidan Murphy (Saints) and upcoming sprinter Andrew Maenda (Saints). Aidan took out the 100m title whilst breaking his own Open and U20 state record (10.35) with a time of 10.33. Andrew placed second with a time of 10.57 qualifying himself for the U20 Youth Commonwealth Games and in doing so, broke the U18 record of 10.62 set by Tod Bateman 17 years ago. His time also smashed his previous PB and U16 record of 10.79 set only a month ago.

Iluka-Rose Taylor (WA) excelled through the U14 400m's to surpass her own previous record of 56.17 that was set in 2022. She ran 55.88 by setting a new state record by 0.29.

Zayden Kamish (SAC) had an excelled day out at Javelin breaking a record previously held by Damian Baker of 59.24m since 1977!!! His throw of 61.02m in the U16 (700g) surpassed this extremelly long standing record by 1.78m to gain him the state record.

Akeesha Snowden T/F37 (Hills) etched her name into the record books in the Para Women 100m Final with a 14.30 (91.62) run. Breaking the U20 and Open T37 state record of 14.85 that was previously set by Keira Post.

Thomas Mattinson Rr2/F32 (Northern Districts) showed his dominance in the Open 100m Frame Running Final clocking a time of 25.61. Smashing his personal best and state record of 32.57 by over 6 seconds. Tommy also raced his way to an Australian record (pending ratification) which was set by Arran Keith last year with a time of 30.50. 

The final day of competition held off the rain long enough for four more state records to be broken by our athletes. 

Marley Raikiwasa (Tea Tree Gully) started off the day by breaking her own U/20 record of 13.59m set earlier this year. Marley broke her record by an impressive 73cm with a throw of 13.84m in Shot Put. 

Akeesha Snowden T/F37 (Hills) then took the opportunity to break her own state record in the Para Women 200m Final with a 29.37 (1.3) run. Breaking her 2022 U20 and Open T37 state record of 30.97.

Keira Post T/F37 (Adelaide Harriers) broke the U17 T37 200m state record with a time of 30.11 (1.3). Improving on her own time of 31.61 she set back in 2021.  

Rounding off the records for the 2023-23 South Australian Track and Field Championships was Jack Netting T/F35 (Hills) in the Para Men 200m Final. Smashing his own record of 28.48 set in 2019 with a run of 27.71.

With attendance increasing from last year’s competition – thank you to all the officials, volunteers and clubs in the smooth delivery of this years Championships.

Notable mention, to Hugo Taheny F21 who earlier this month on the 10th of February broke his own World Record and State Record at home with a Shot Put of 11.45m, a personal best of 0.25m. 

Notable mention, to two of our running athletes Riley Cocks and Isobel Batt-Doyle who ran Half Marathon's in Japan earlier this month on February the 5th. These wonderful athletes broke the Mens and Womens Best on Records with Riley finishing in a swift time of 1.02.43 with Isobel zooming home to finish in a time of 1.09.27. 

Notable mention, to Alex Dunn who in the recent Victoria State Champs broke his own State Record in the U18, 110m Hurdles, lowering it to 14.04.
