South Australian Combined Event Championships

Athletics SA hosted the South Australian Combined Event Championships at the upgraded SA Athletics Stadium on Saturday 14th and Sunday 15th January 2023.

Athletes encountered sweltering and gusty conditions on the first day followed by a day 2 that was much cooler allowing some strong performances to be recorded across the age groups.

Christine Gayen (Pembroke) took her seventh consecutive Women’s Open title with a points score of 4,968, her highest in any of the Championships to date, while Lachlan Burrows (Western) competed through injury to secure his first Men’s Open title with a points score of 5,632. Maya Lange (Pembroke – 3,352) and Ruby Sulicich (Pembroke – 3,045) placed 2nd and 3rd respectively in the Open Women’s and Tyler Ford (Saints – 5,431) and Zac Washington (Western – 5,180) secured Silver and Bronze in a relatively even Open Men’s competition.

Zade Kretschmer (Flinders) excelled in the Men’s U20 event (5,908) to take the title. Zayden Kamish (Southern – 5,125) won from Jevan Phillipou and Alex Dunn in the U18’s while the U16 Men’s saw a battle royale play out with Max Thompson (Saints – 3,888) pipping training partner and club mate Ken Ferrante-Tanika (Saints – 3,886) by just two points. Alex Dunn, holder of the current U16 100m Hurdles State Record now has the U18 110m Hurdles Record to his name – 14.18 secs.

Tea Tree Gully’s Tryphena Hewitt added the Women’s U20 Championship to her list of achievements (3,773). Leila Croker (Western) executed a series of events that exceeded the U18 State Record held by Christine Randall since 1985 – a points score of 5,184 saw Crocker raise the bar by 99 points. In the Women’s U16 event Iluka-Rose Taylor (Western) smashed the previous State Record (Christine Frewin ‘87) by 266 points with a final points score of 5,023, and along the way put down a new U14 State Record of 5.67m in the long jump. Georgie Fielder (Western – 4,649) and Ava Barton (Saints – 4,411) rounded out the U16 podium.

In the Pentathlon events Felicity Alexander (Hills Districts) in the O50, Cassie Neubauer (Tea Tree Gully) in the O35 and Mia Ehrlich (Saints) in the U14’s were awarded Gold Medals in the Women’s, while Matt Lovell (Western) in the O50 and Craig Todd (Tea Tree Gully) in the O35 categories took home the Men’s titles.

Our Officials, Volunteers and Staff are to be commended for the spirit and way the Championships were staged in what was very hot weather, particularly on Day 1. Extending the program to allow more time for athlete recovery and officials to rest proved pivotal in the successful delivery of the event.
