Coaches are a vital component within athletics in South Australia. A recent Athletics SA study estimated the relative value of coaching in South Australia at over $750,000 annually. This section contains information about accreditation as an athletics coach under the National Coach Accreditation Scheme.

Accreditation is very important for all those who coach athletics. Accreditation represents a coach’s competency level and demonstrates to parents, athletes, and other coaches, that a particular coach has received appropriate coach education and has the skills and knowledge to effective coach athletes relative to their level of accreditation. Athletics SA require all coaches involved with Athletics SA clubs to be accredited and registered (more information about Registration is available in the Coaching menu).

The Athletics Australia Coach Accreditation Framework consists of the Introduction to Coaching (non accredited course) and 5 accreditation levels with a number of different pathways for coaches. The Framework is summarised in the diagram below:

A detailed written summary of the Framework is available to view below:

Coach Accreditation Framework Summary

Accreditation Realignment Process

From the 1st of January 2011, a realignment of current accreditation will take place. Athletics Australia will automatically realign the accreditation of current coaches with the new framework. Information about the alignment process is summarised in the diagram below.

Recognition of Current Competence

Under the new framework, Athletics Australia have allowed for Recognition of Current Competence (RCC). Individuals who are not currently accredited, but are coaching or have coached athletics in the past, may be eligible to receive accreditation under the framework at the appropriate level without having to undergo coach education courses. RCC is currently under development. For more information, please contact Athletics SA Coaching, Officiating and Clubs Coordinator Kate Semiz on 8354 3477 or

Police Clearance

From the 1st of January 2011, new changes to child protection laws in South Australia come into effect. It is now a requirement that all accredited coaches have a valid police clearance. Athletics SA will need to sight a current police check before processing any accreditation and/or registration for participants that complete courses. For more information, and to complete the form, please visit the SAPOL website. For further information on the requirements, please click HERE or contact the Athletics SA Office.
