From the 9th – 12th of May, the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra hosted 80 of the country’s top young athletes for an U17 Development Squad camp. These athletes were selected for the squad as they show a lot of talent and the ability to one day represent Australia on the international athletics stage. Congratulations to the seven South Australian athletes selected – William McCann, Tayla Philis, Declan Carruthers, Kurtis Marschall, Lachlan Page, Lucy Fitzgerald and Brayden Davidson.

The high performance training camp was designed to give them an opportunity to learn more about becoming an elite athlete. Over the four days, they took part in training sessions for their specific events, as well as sessions such as mental skills and competition readiness, recovery education, pathways from junior to senior athletics, and nutrition.

Athletics SA hope that our athletes got a lot out of this camp, and we look forward to what they can achieve in the future!

Athletics SA is pleased to announce that the City of Charles has agreed to again be the event’s naming rights sponsor for 2013.

Are you interested in an overseas experience in track and field?

2014 SA goes USA – April 12 to May 2, 2014

South Australian Coach, Rick Wilson is offering High School Club and State Athletes an international athletics experience to compete in the United States at competitions in Nevada and California.

This escorted tour offers a learning experience and opportunity to see and enjoy different cultures and lifestyles in conjunction with great competition, entertainment sightseeing and visits to schools.

Experience Disneyland and Universal Studios, a tour to the Grand Canyon, some of the best shopping in the world plus a Las Vegas Show (G rated)!

Rick’s has a long history and connection with athletics in South Australia being employed with Athletics SA for 4 years working in the role of Development Officer, State Team Manager and State Team Coach in early 2000. During this time and up to now, he has been involved at club level coaching many athletes onto State representations and nationals medals. Rick has been leading tours to the US biannually for 10 years having safely escorted over 130 students over this period.

Rick would like to invite South Australian athletes to be part of the 2014 Tour. He is taking expressions of interest now. Please email Rick on randpwilson@bigpond.com or phone on 0447 501 8017 for an Expression of Interest Form.

I was nervous sending Kurtis to the US as he had never been away from his parents before, let along overseas. It was going to be a lengthy trip and Kurtis was notorious for losing clothing. Thankfully, he didn’t lose his passport.

On the first day Kurtis lost my/his communication tool, being his mobile phone, my one piece of access to him lost… Unbelievably he left it at Sydney airport. This did not seem to matter in the end as we used Facebook and Patti gave constant updates via email. After a few days, I just let it all take its natural course.

Kurtis had an absolute ball. He enjoyed every aspect of the trip from seeing the amazing sights of LA at night to living it up at his home stay parents mansion. He made friends quickly at the colleges and felt very motivated to compete in a totally new environment. What a thrill. They were all treated like celebrities, especially from the girls.

Kurtis washed his own clothes, spent his money sparingly, bought some great cheap clothes from the outlet shops and created a special bond with his new travelling buddies. Rick and Patti were incredibly organized and professional and treated the athletes to a very special trip. One they will never forget. It was a busy time and they crammed in so many sights and attractions. Kurtis’s favourite part of the trip, besides competing at track and field events was visiting universal studios and riding in the limo before seeing ‘the blue man group’.

I can highly recommend the trip. Kurtis became much more independent and came home a different young person. As parents, it was everything we hoped for.

Petra and John

Kurtis Marschall – Pole Vault

The SA goes USA tour was one of the greatest experiences I have ever had! I got to compete in the sport I love in a country similar yet so different to our own.

In America ‘track and field’ as it is known as over there, is much bigger then here in Australia. They have full tracks at every high school; something I had to see to believe. The competition was great and tough yet we all still managed to medal which was amazing to bring back home.

The athletes we met were all so friendly and welcoming, as were the host families.

We got to see some amazing landmarks including the Hoover Dam, Disney Land and Las Vegas which I hope to never forget.

From the trip, I became a much more independent person and learnt more about where I am at with athletics against kids from another country.

The SA goes USA tour was an unforgettable trip and I hope to one day go back to catch up with all the amazing people I met while over there.

Casey Donehue

High Jump, Long & Triple Jump – Mt Gambier

Please note that this is not an Athletics SA Sanctioned Tour and Athletics SA takes no responsibility for the SA Goes USA Tour.
